Destination moon with additive manufacturing using lunar dust

3D printing objects using lunar material is no longer science fiction. To facilitate the establishment of a base on the Moon, researchers at IMT Mines Albi are seriously examining this possibility. In the Institut Clément Ader (ICA) laboratories, they are striving to implement an additive manufacturing process using a terrestrial rock with similar properties to lunar dust. Their aim is to improve the autonomy of the Moon’s first inhabitants.

Measuring pollution emissions from maritime transport

While road traffic pollution is now strictly controlled, the same cannot be said for the maritime sector, with its different fuels, engine types and regulations that differ depending on the shipping area. The EMINAV project, funded by Ademe to the tune of €258,000 for three years, aims to assess the pollution emitted by maritime transport […]

Eclore Actuators develops highly energy-efficient, bio-inspired actuators

Traditional pneumatic and hydraulic actuators are used in all sectors of industry, but they have their limits in terms of energy consumption. Eclore Actuators, a start-up incubated at IMT Atlantique, has redesigned the component using a new folding process developed in-house. Tens or even hundreds of pneumatic actuators are used in most manufacturing machines to […]

How long can we continue to exceed planetary limits?

By Natacha Gondran, Mines Saint-Étienne, UMR 5600 Environment, City, Society (EVS), and Aurélien Boutaud, associate researcher at UMR 5600 EVS. In recent months, several scientific papers months have drawn attention to the fact that new planetary limits have been crossed (e.g., here and here). These worrying observations have been the subject of numerous media reports. But what do scientists mean […]

Virtual reality to improve crisis management and cybersecurity

Known for its use in entertainment, virtual reality also offers interesting perspectives for crisis management and cybersecurity. Two projects carried out at IMT Mines Albi and IMT Atlantique aim to virtually simulate crises in supply chains and visualize cyberattacks. When managing a supply chain or a digital environment, it can be difficult to visualize all […]

Simulation and serious games: training tools for crisis management

To prepare elected officials, local authorities and citizens to respond in times of crises, immersive simulations and serious games are particularly useful. At IMT Mines Alès and Mines Saint-Étienne, these techniques are used to help prepare people for the worst. Several sirens are blaring in a chilly room at IMT Mines Alès. Staff from the […]

Side Channel Attacks: How to exploit vulnerabilities of processors?

Side channel attacks exploit confidential information obtained from microarchitecture of general purpose computers, in other terms microprocessors. Maria Mushtaq, researcher in cybersecurity at Telecom Paris, explains how these attacks work and give suggestions to improve computer security. What are the motivations that can lead to side channel attacks? Maria Mushtaq: A side-channel attack is a […]
